Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara (1949 –1987) was a Burkinabé communist revolutionary and President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. A Marxist–Leninist and Pan-Africanist, he was viewed by supporters as a charismatic and iconic figure of revolution and is sometimes referred to as "Africa's Che Guevara".
He launched programs for social, ecological and economic. His domestic policies were focused on preventing famine with agrarian self-sufficiency and land reform, prioritizing education with a nationwide literacy campaign and promoting public health by vaccinating 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles.
Other components of his national agenda included planting over 10 million trees to combat the growing desertification of the Sahel, redistributing land from feudal landlords to peasants, suspending rural poll taxes and domestic rents and establishing a road and railway construction programme. On the local level, Sankara called on every village to build a medical dispensary and had over 350 communities build schools with their own labour. Moreover, he outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy. He appointed women to high governmental positions and encouraged them to work outside the home and stay in school, even if pregnant.
His revolutionary programs for African self-reliance made him an icon to many of Africa's poor. A week before his assassination, Sankara declared: "While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas". He was shot during a coup d'état that brought Blaise Compaoré to power on 15 October 1987.
His memory remains vivid in the youth of Burkina Faso but also more generally in Africa, which has made him an icon, an "African Che Guevara", alongside Patrice Lumumba in particular. [wiki]
